This year, I'm giving the gift of a new set of coilovers and swaybars to the government. Or, at least, I'm not getting it for myself because there goes what I thought I was saving for.

i got laid off a few years back and went on unemployment. when the unemployment was set up noone mentioned you need to pay taxes on unemployment. It kinda blew my mind. So when tax time came I owed a bunch of money, which, you know is growing on my money tree out back.

Kids are awesome. Let me just throw that out there.
I could take the family to Europe with our refund if not for having just paid off the old car and needing to buy a larger family car soon.

Yeah, I was on disability for a total of about 3 months last year before my back surgery. Disability benefits are taxable but they didn't take withholding. I didn't find out until December when the office secretary was putting together end-of-year finance info for us all. :-(

Hey, just remember that as long as you pay on time, and you paid the safe harbor amounts during 2014, you didn't give Uncle Sam an interest free loan for the year! You earned a some interest on it (that's most likely taxable of course). See, there's a bright side to everything!

Because of my numerous food allergies, most of my food is tax deductable as a medical expense. But it is nearly triple the cost of normal food, so it may just even out

My wife and I set up our W2's to pull EXTRA tax money out all year so we avoid this.
Her's pulls an extra 20$ a paycheck and mine pulls an extra 50 or so. We got sick of having that bill to pay every spring.

Weird a few years ago when I was laid off and was on unemployment it was all done online and there was an obvious box you had to check for them to withhold taxes, maybe things changed after people complained? I was on UE in like 2010

yea that was about when I was too. I went to the office to get it set up. I guess she just skipped over that.

Yeah at the office is likely different, I knew about the taxes thing because my friend had been on UE and told me make sure you have them take taxes out.

I've never understood the U.S. tax system. So everyone fills out their own tax returns each year and the government sends a bill (in the U.K. we only do our own tax returns if we are sell-employed, just come back from working or living abroad, work outside the U.K., etc...).

The US system does seem like it's designed to be complicated. Everyone fills out a return, some have to pay extra, some get some money back and everybody hopes the IRS doesn't audit them.
